Don’t Go Swimming After Eating

Is it Real or Wives Tale?

After cooking feverishly to serve his gourmet food to some of the 700+ spectators at the Escondido Swim Club Meet this summer, Chef Dave wanted to know, is it Real or a Wives Tale that you shouldn’t swim after eating.

Swim Meets build appetites

Although I didn’t receive a reply from the coach at the Escondido Swim Club, an Encinitas Lifeguard says, “I think it is fine, but it depends on whether you’re a strong or poor swimmer. If you’re a poor swimmer it might affect you.”

The official rule from the American Red Cross states, “There is no specific time you must wait before heading back into the water. Instead, the rule of thumb is to use common sense about swimming and eating. Before beginning any strenuous activity after eating, including swimming, you should feel comfortable, not sluggish or tired.”

So there you have it. There are no set rules. Just know your own limits and be safe in the water!

Chow for now,
